The League of California Cities is gathering signatures to qualify a ballot initiative aimed at protecting local revenues from another raid of local coffers by the State. This is of utmost importance to Cities, Counties and School districts. As the State attempts to balance its budget, they are eyeing local revenues and are considering another raid. We need to protect our funds; without them, our safety services are in jeopardy and so our local services.

By WeHo News Staff, West Hollywood, California (February 22, 2009) Amidst calls for tabling the item in lieu of development of a citywide policy on outdoor advertising via development agreement, the West Hollywood city council unanimously approved replacement of a 144 sq ft billboard with one nine times its size in exchange for $90,000 per year. A plan to replace the current billboard atop the Rainbow Room at 9015 Sunset Strip, a restaurant co-owned by Nic Adler, who also owns the neighboring Roxy Theater music venue, with one 14′ X 48′ (672 sq ft) was originally denied by the Planning Commission, appealed to council and denied there, with urgings that a development agreement be hammered out that would fiscally benefit the city.

What makes this year’s Census even more historic is the unprecedented and welcoming outreach by U.S. Census leaders and managers to include the entire lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and allied community in these efforts, as a way to achieve the nation’s most accurate count possible. By WeHo News Staff, West Hollywood, California (February 8, 2009) West Hollywood, the source of a number of natural springs with underground aquifers and rivers running below it, needs new gutters on one of its hill-climbing streets, Larrabee, to prevent run-off on the street surface.This water comes from the underground garages and basements that reach to the high water table and, until now, pumped the excess water directly into the street.With that in mind, construction begins today to install, along the curb of the street, a grated trench drain system designed to carry away the nuisance surface water.

West Hollywood, California (February 4, 2010) A jury found West Hollywood resident David Jassy, a rapper and record producer from Sweden, guilty Monday of second-degree murder in the death of John Osnes, a 55-year-old jazz pianist, in Hollywood. Mr. Jassy stood accused of attacking Mr. Osnes, a popular local pianist and pedestrian rights activist, punching him in the head, kicking him in the face and then driving over his mortally wounded body. Commentators at the time likened the affair to an incident straight from the previous year’s Oscar winner, “Crash,” a film about racial tensions and random life changing happenstances.

West Hollywood will continue work on its General Plan with a community workshop this Saturday.The General Plan community workshop will include presentations on key issues including housing, transportation, land use, and climate change, as well as opportunities to review and give feedback on a variety of goals and policies for other topics to be included in the updated General Plan.
