Sunday was the 66th Anniversary of D-Day. That’s something you would have missed if you only paid attention to statements by President Obama and the White House.

Everyone knows tax increases are coming.
But a Wall Street Journal editorial explains that these hikes will be bigger than expected, with taxes on dividends nearly tripling.
Last week, the Senate Budget Committee passed a fiscal 2011 budget that includes a 164 percent increase in the top dividend tax rate to 39.6 percent from 15 percent now.

AP is reporting that John Paul Stevens, the longest-serving justice on the Supreme Court, will retire at the end of this term.

For the second consecutive cycle, Republicans and Democrats will hold their presidential nominating conventions in back-to-back weeks. The Democratic National Committee announced today that the party will hold its gathering on the week of September 3, 2012. Republicans are due to meet the week of August 27; in 2008, Democrats held their convention first.

Presidential Tracking Polls: President Obama ended this week about where he was at this time last week in the Gallup tracking poll. His job approval rating stayed steady at 50%; his disapproval ticked up a point to 43%. Rasmussen showed a slight deterioration for the President over the past week.

The President’s plan actually pushes back offshore drilling until at least 2012 and blocks drilling in the Pacific Ocean and parts of the Atlantic. He also leaves off limits those portions of the Gulf of Mexico where experts believe there is the most oil and gas.
