The meeting called by the Planning Commission for June 8, 2011 (last night) between concerned neighbors and the Abbey Restaurent’s owner David Cooley regarding the pending nightclub application for an expanded Conditional Use Permit (“CUP”) aka a “hybrid” permit allowing for dancing in The Abbey Restaurant while it continues to operate as a restaurant as per its CUP was productive and informative for two reasons.

Since it’s opening in Fall of 2010, Cleo has become a restaurant with a lot of buzz. Normally, a restaurant this trendy turns out to have disappointing food followed by an astronomical bill at the end. Cleo is a wonderful departure from this hipster recipe. The restaurant is an SBE property located in the Redbury Hotel. Chef Daniel Elmaleh prepares fresh, contemporary Middle Easter food with flair.

Cinco de Mayo is a popular holiday in the City of the Angeles, given our close proximity to Mexico and our fierce love of Margaritas here in our irrigated and aqua-ducted desert. If you are thinking of having a festive party next week, one place you may want to visit is Downtown LA’s Piñata District, located on Olympic Boulevard, just north of Central Avenue like we did!

One such art deco gem is Maxwell DeMille’s Cicada Club. Located in the historic James Oviatt Building in downtown LA. which has been dubbed the “Lalique palace” for the Rene Lalique designed molded glass door elevator panels, front doors, and chandeliers. On Sunday evenings it becomes a 1920s to 1930s styled supper club featuring live bands, an orchestra, singers, and dancers. A three course dinner is available to guests for $49 per person.
