SUNSET BOULEVARD CONSTRUCTION UPDATE JULY 6-JULY 12, 2010

Please remember that all businesses will be open during their normal business hours, and we encourage you to support your local businesses during construction.

This American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) project has created or saved 228 jobs as of July 1, 2010.

ROADWAY WORK: (GRIND & BASE PAVE)
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, the contractor will be grinding off the top surface of the existing roadway and preparing the base layer of asphalt. The grinding has been going slower than anticipated due to hard concrete.

This work is required to be done at night due to mitigations by the Regional Air Quality Management District. Based on lessons learned from the previous two sections already completed, they are now requiring us to work at night, when traffic volumes are lower and there are less vehicles kicking up dust into the air. Work hours are 9:00 pm to 7:00 am.

Once the road has been ground down, they prepare the road for the base layer of pavement. They have scheduled another round of paving for Thursday and Friday July 8-9, 2010. This will be done during the daytime 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

CONCRETE WORK SIDEWALKS & CURBS:
Most of the sidewalks and curb work is completed. The contractor still has a few areas that need to be fixed. Work includes taking out the broken concrete and then replacing it with new sidewalk or curb.

TREE PLANTING:
The contractor is continuing with the planting in the tree wells of the Shade Tree District, which is the west portion of the Sunset Strip. The Golden Rain Tree is being planted in this district, which was recommended by the Public Facilities Commission, and approved by City Council.

STORM DRAIN WORK:
The contractor continues with the installation of new storm drains and catch basins for the new medians at the west City entrance to the Sunset Strip.

NEW TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROLLERS:
New computer equipment that run the traffic signals are being installed at the intersections. One has been installed and is being tested. The rest will be installed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

UTILITY ADJUSTMENTS:
The various utility companies will be adjusting vaults, manholes and valves in the roadway.

During working hours, traffic lanes will be reduced down to one lane in each direction. The project is anticipated to be completed during the week of July 19-23. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during the construction and temporary lane closures.

Phone calls can still be directed to our community liaison,
Alicia Bell-Molina at 310-597-8206.
