“National Night Out” is today, Aug. 4th, and residents around the country (including Burien) will be getting together with local police officers for neighborhood gatherings, with the goal of giving crime and criminals a “going away party.”
This annual event is intended to involve all segments of the community, building a healthier, safer community; generating support for anti-crime programs and strengthening police/community relations.
National Night Out is an occasion to celebrate past successes and discuss current challenges or issues. This is a time to re-dedicate ourselves to improving the quality of life in our community.
For instance, I met a woman who was very nervous about going through the neighborhood’s blue recycling bins so I introduced myself to her and offered to make a special bag of cans for her each Sunday for Monday pickup. I hope she feels less nervous and that her and her mother will come tonight, meet my neighbors, and get their approval too to not only help recycle but to also subsidize their family‘s income during this tough time.
To find out if there’s an event in your neighborhood…ask your neighbors! These events are not publicized, as they are meant to be ‘hood/community-oriented, and are run and managed within each area.
